About a year ago I injured my big toe playing football, I thought I had broken it so rested it for 2 months (I broken toes a few times and that is generally all the doctors can do for me). Then the next time I played football (February this year) I immediately injured it again, so this time I went to the hospital and got it x-rayed. Turns out it wasn't broken, but in fact it was sprained. I've rested it since, only doing cycling and swimming to stay fit because that placed no strain on the toe and it has not been a problem. I also did the basic physio stretching the doctor recommended (bend it back and forward).
Recently I started running again because I have registered for Lidingöloppet and had to get some running in beforehand. The toe has now started to hurt again. The pain is mainly an ache from the underside of the knuckle to mid way along the arch, and a sharper pain in the top of the knuckle. Flexibility is reduced, particularly bending it away from me.
My questions are:
- How can I protect the toe during exercise (strapping, special shoes/insoles)?
- Has anyone experienced a similar problem and can recommend good ways to rehab it?
- If I do go to a doctor is there realistically a fix for such a problem? I don't want to go if there is nothing they can even do about it because that would waste money and time.
apologies if this sounds too much like seeking medical advice but I'm most interested in finding a strapping/support technique, the other elements are just an added bonus
