I'm wanting to buy a quality heart rate monitor. I need to be able to set my own limits so that it will alarm when I am below the lower limit and above the higher limit. I would like this heart rate monitor to automatically detect the presence of a heartbeat from the chest strap (but not necessarily required.) Any suggestions?

They all recognize your heartbeat automatically after you put on a chest strap. So rather than asking for a specific suggestion, it would be best to focus on what features of a heart rate monitor are most important (depending on your type of sports) and then pick the one that meets your price level and feature set – Ivo Flipse Mar 29 '12 at 17:11
Thanks. I really do just want to put in my own limits and have it beep me above or below. No sports involved or anything. I realized I had a subscription to consumer reports so I looked them up there. I settled on a Polar FT7 since it was rated quite highly. – Dave Mar 29 '12 at 19:16
Any Polar is indeed probably a decent choice, perhaps you should come back if you have any questions regarding using it in some kind of sports activity. – Ivo Flipse Mar 29 '12 at 20:02
