comment I have a bit of a tummy. To avoid it getting larger, can I do gym exercises only for my abdomen?
Right on. I guess, going back to the actual OP, the overwhelming piece of info for the OP is "you can not 'spot reduce' fat". -- of course, the answer being "no". indeed it's a common question on this site eh.

I mean there are papers showing bread and pasta are good for you. (!) That's fine in theory, but if you're Fat, body fat is caused by carbohydrates triggering your pancreas to cause the "door" of fat cells to move "fat" from your bloody to inside the fat cell: to allow the fat cells to "release" "fat", (triglycerides to glycerides), all you need to do is reduce carbohydrate intake. So -- if you are a fatass, carbs (potatoes, bread, pasta, rice, etc) are out :O

...however (as you perhaps sadly agree) for the typical American or European "eating potatoes" means eating mindboggling amounts thereof. I guess that's the summary of my views on the matter, I'm afraid!

Hi Sean, yes, those studies are completely wrong. I"m not ignoring them, I'm saying they are hopelessly incorrect, and indeed, basically "really really amazingly silly and actually hilariously stupid". :) Recall that we have been through the era of staggeringly stupid 'health science'" with things like the (snicker) "food pyramid" promoted by Big Agri business, via "governments" i.e. lobbying money. Potatoes are about 25% carbohydate, as you know. Thus, FOR SURE, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU that it would be good to eat (say) 30 or 40 grams of potatoes a few times a week...

comment Best exercise to lose belly fat fast
It's true that is you do a TRULY INCREDIBLE amount of jogging (say, about two hours a day, every day), that will "use" a tiny amount of calories. You will then be able to eat "that much extra" each day. But the amount of food involved is minimal. Also this is PURELY THEORETICAL -- if you jog a lot, it makes you very hungry, far in excess of the "extra amount you can eat". (This is - obviously - the reason that the staggering "exercise boom" of the 90s and 2000s, achieved absolutely nothing towards reducing the fatness of planetary population!!)

Exercise (either aerobic or weightlifting) has no connection, at all, to body fat. The only connection is that, aerobic exercise (say jogging) will make you very hungry, making it difficult to eat properly.

"Eat more vegetables than fruits". Well don't forget - fruits are pure sugar. They have no nutritional value at all (well no more than any other pure carbohydrate). You're just as well to drink cola, or just eat spoons of white sugar, than eat fruit. (Fruit JUICE is pretty much the single highest-carbohydrate thing you can consume, other than just pouring sugar crystals in to your mouth.) Regarding vegetables, no person should ever eat potatoes or carrots, ever. You may as well just go ahead and eat pasta or even bread. Sure, low-carbo vegetables are great for you.

comment How can an overweight engineer get back in shape?
Hi John, thank you. You raise a critical issue about 'in the mind'. For me the secret was I studied a very large range of books (perhaps 65 - a huge stack) and the only one of any help was "Life without bread" by Lutz. Why? The Lutzdiat scheme of carbohydrate intake, for me solves the "mental" problem, that is to say solves carbohydrate cravings or addiction. So, it worked for me (as you can see :) )
