comment Dealing with a bulging disc in lower back
This is a good answer, but could probably be made better with some more specifics. ie - what exercises are good for building the posterior chain without too much risk to exacerbating the problem? What about things for those of us who don't have access to a pool or large body of water for swimming?

This is a great answer, more detailed than the others. I'd also add that my pain increases if I consume foods that trigger inflammation in my body, and when I don't drink enough water. I try to get at least 2 quarts/litres of water in per day (ideally more), in addition to any other drinks/liquids I consume. Also, +1 for the traction/inversion. I do horizontal traction at my chiro's and it's been a lifesaver for me.

@BrianR - Has she ever gotten the tests I mentioned? You generally have to specifically ask for them (and sometimes even fight for them). Doctors rarely volunteer those tests. If you have, then it falls back to my other points - crack down on the diet and logging it, and be patient.

@Tom - Worst case scenario with going and getting bloodwork is that the bloodwork comes up clean. Ruling out medical issues is a far cry different than swearing an oath in front of a grand jury. Additionally, doing one thing (getting bloodwork done) does not exclude doing other things (buckling down on tracking accuracy).

@BrianR - I'd definitely have her go to the doctor, then, especially given your previous comment about where the fat is being stored. Weight gain in the stomach area is often indicative of impaired insulin resistance (which can happen in "normal weight" individuals, as well).

@JohnP - Out of curiosity, do you consider vegetarianism a fad diet, as well?

@Ondrej - That's where my first section comes in - do rehab work, but otherwise your body is doing enough by repairing the injury. That leaves you with occupying your mind.

comment What is a good metric for defining an ideal weight?
@PaulProgrammer - As a side note, you need neither get up at 5am nor spend an hour riding a stationary bike or lifting weights to lose weight/get in shape. Find something you like to do and find a time when you're consistently most motivated to do it, and you'll be a lot better off.

@Evan - For every person that does better phasing things out, there's a person that does better going cold turkey.

comment Hip & ankle flexibility - how to progress?
That will depend largely on your body and how much you push yourself (don't hurt yourself, of course!). Some people naturally gain flexibility faster than others, and some people start out more flexible than others. That said, I'd venture to guess that you should start seeing noticeable changes within a few weeks. It might help to have someone take pictures once a week or every two weeks, so that you can track your progress.

comment I need help on losing fats on my hideous tummy. Help
@Chelonian - I'd say that's not the norm, though, especially for novice dieters. If you know what you're doing, and know you have the control, sure (I've even seen a story by a guy who lost 5-10lbs in a week on something insanely low, like 500cal/day, but he really knew what he was doing and was doing it as an experiment).
