My mistake. Sorry.

Yes it would. That was my point. But also, it is very very hard for a female to gain 20 pounds of muscle.

comment Is it a good idea to only do cardio?
The fact is that the average guy has way too much fat, and too small muscles which he does not realize, because the fat is giving him the impression he has more. In my experience people trying to lose all fat, up to 6-pack, realize they become too thin, just because they thought they have more muscles underneath.

Quite the opposite. May be you are referring to the look of professional body-builders in their competitive period? Why would an extreme athlete in their peak form be the example that you think I had in mind?

'that isn't going to work at all'... how did you come to that conclusion? Low-carb diets are the most effective for weight loss, according to lots of research (already gave a link to one). Also this very same diet is what I used to both gain muscle and get abs to show for the first time in my life.

I wouldn't call it necessarily 'high protein'. In this case the % are high because the total calorie intake is low. So a 2.2g * X kg = high percentage, but the total amount is consistent with what athletes take when building muscle.

siouxfan45, actually Atkin's diet is the oldest, still very popular diet (originally introduced in the 70s).

Why would they fatigue quicker? Carbs get converted to ATP much faster than proteins and fats, but once in the blood, the energy from all the sources works the same way.

@RobinAshe provide sources for your claims? Because diets like Atkins, Paleo etc. based on low-carb are overwhelmingly beating all the others. If you want a reference, a Stanford study here youtube.com/watch?v=eREuZEdMAVo

-1 for totally ignorant and misleading advice. 1:1:1 is not how people naturally eat, is not consistent with any good diet, is not the way athletes eat. Having enough of the essential nutrients in your diet is what a 'balanced diet' means.

comment Muscle gain: six-meals-a-day-diet foods?
Yeah probably, but you should not do it on purpose. The more you put on, the more you will need to get off later (thus losing more muscle in the process too).

comment How many calories would a programmer (or somebody who is mostly at a desk) burn on a daily basis?
You can lose weight without exercise, just by dieting. You may have hard time losing any weight by just doing exercise (your food intake naturally increase with exercise, if not controlled).

Of course, I am not claiming exercise is irrelevant for health. The topic though is weight loss. Diet is way more effective for that. The problem is people trying to ignore diet.

Quite enough, actually, if they restrict what they eat. You can out-eat any amount of exercise.

The book 'Body By Science' is one source. Another one is ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8210578 (talks about athletes).

@IvoFlipse I have read it in numerous places (science based) that intensive jogging (or similar exercises) performed for a prolonged time (like 10 years) lead to joint wear and other problems.

'Why We Get Fat: And What To Do About It' mentions often when and why the official advice differs from the scientific findings.

That is why I recommend a really good book, based on science. You should not follow a random guy's advice on the internet ;)

-1. While doing sports for the health benefits is a good idea, doing them for losing weight is seriously sub-optimal solution. Running every other day: wastes lots of time; and makes you hungrier, diminishing the benefits; doing it regularly whole life puts too much strain on joints.
