I lift, train combat sports, and am interested in any physical or outdoor culture.

comment At what temperature is Creatine destroyed when cooking meat?
@chrisjlee It's axiomatic to some (including me) that getting one's creatine/vitamin D/protein/whatever from normal food and activities is inherently superior to supplementing. It's often cheaper, simpler, and tastier.

comment Exercises that can replace squats?
@DaveNewton I'm not opposed to progressions, and of course there's a load on the joint--that's the point of lifting weights! But "the faster you switch more directions, the more stress is placed on a joint" is only true if all else is equal, which they are not. I was referring specifically to the graf ending with this sentence: "tolerance to load is enhanced in the deepest portion of the squat with a protective effect conferred to ligamentous structures." That doesn't sound like the turn-around (the deepest period in a squat) "over-stresses" the joint.

@DaveNewton I'd +1 your comment except for "the turn-around over-stresses the joint". Squats stress and thereby strengthen the joint, but my understanding of the research (for instance) is that the joint is protected during that phase (and throughout the movement, properly performed).

Don't deadlifts and barbell hip thrusts also target hip drive and the posterior chain?

And how tall are you? Male or female?

Excellent point, that's a major omission on my part. Most effective for developing strength primarily, but also for stimulating growth. Lifting light didn't get Ronnie Coleman any muscles. (He might do light back-off sets in order to get another set in, however.)

@DaveNewton What do you mean by turn-around point?

Deadlifts are already in the StrongLifts program. Would you suggest she add more sets of them, do them heavier, do a variant, or just omit squats?

Did she read the StrongLifts PDF that has about fifteen pages dedicated to why squats are both essential and safe? If she's convinced by anecdote, that should do it. If she's more convinced by science, point her to this instead.

When you plateaued, what were the sets you completed? E.g. 5, 5, 5, 3, 0 or 5, 5, 3, 3, 3? How much are you eating--have you gained weight? What were the starting weights on each of these? Why are you emphasizing the press? What is involved in this SL->SS transition other than just hopping from one to the other?

comment Cons of doing all the Starting Strength “Practical Programming Novice Program” exercises on the same day?
@Sancho You're right! Weird. Maybe the PP version in the wiki is based off the sidebar on page 101 that describes coaching situations where teaching the clean would be contraindicated?

comment How can I increase my pull-ups reps?
@Sancho The program is to put a pull-up bar somewhere you pass by frequently, and never pass it without doing one or a handful of pull-ups. Even if you can only do a couple at a time, you can accrue a great volume.
