comment How do I squat if I can't keep my heels on the floor?
Stand in front of a door end-on so that you can grab on to both sides of the doorknob. Put your feet wider, point your toes out, and try again. This question may send you to other helpful resources.

Betty, it looks like this is a duplicate of the question I linked to. If you have specific details that make your question different, it would be great if you edited your question to include them so we can help.

I'd look for a doctor or physical therapist who specializes in getting athletes back in the game, instead of those who just want to mark you as "fixed" (but unable to do normal activities).

Why do you want to gain weight while training for a triathlon? This answer should take care of all your weight-gain questions. This answer goes through the reasons why you shouldn't use BMI, a tool for populations, to guide you in personal fitness decisions.

Great answer, but why would someone who can do 12 pull-ups use a band for assistance?

@jontyc It's assistance work, the goal of which is not mass gain or whole-body strength (like the main exercises) but rather endurance of small muscles and other physical traits like work capacity.

Won't the body just use fat or protein to make up for the difference, if your carb intake is lower than the amount needed?

@Grohlier To perform a muscle-up, like he says, or to get his chest to the bar, which many people consider to be the full range of motion for the exercise.

Proper pull-up form, as I dimly understand it, is to maximize the pull one gets from squeezing the shoulder blades together. Of course the biceps will be involved as well.

comment Why might assisted chin-ups not be recommended to build up to unassisted ones?
My experience is negligible in this matter, but the extreme help that band-assisted chins give at the bottom makes me suspect that people who use them to progress are relying on the all-over strength increases from the novice effect, and not the specific utility of the bands. I prefer negatives, holds, lat pull-downs, and partner-assisted chins.
