I lift, train combat sports, and am interested in any physical or outdoor culture.

Good question. What's the immediate problem you're facing? Why do you think it's one weak muscle instead of all of them? Are you not getting results with your current programming?

comment Is it possible to become relatively fit without going for runs?
Agreed with Ben. Doing strength-specific work is so much more productive than relying on the activity itself to produce strength. I was shocked when I made the jump.

comment How to manage inflammation in a resistance training program?
Another source on the "inflammation is a necessary part of healing" side: Kelly Starrett of CrossFit/MobilityWOD/physical therapy/rowing fame.

comment How do I bench press safely without a spotter?
@MikeS Novice or intermediate, as well as strength or power training rather than hypertrophy work. I'm not arguing against training to failure; I'm saying it's certainly not the only method to get results, and certainly not appropriate for all purposes.

@MikeS What's your position on the other points I raised?

comment So am I at a calorie deficit now?
I think it's important to understand that a calories-in, calories-burnt calculation is an incomplete way of understanding weight loss. Foods have effects beyond their calories, and numerous other factors--hormone levels, sleep, stress, inflammation, type of exercise...the list is very long--all dramatically affect one's body weight over time.

@MikeS I agree with Meade--there are plenty of ways to stress the muscles and disrupt homeostasis without going to failure every time. Coach Sommer's Building the Gymnastic Body method is a good example, as is any 3x5 or 5x5 program. The last reps should always be hard, but there's no need for them to be absolutely maximal, and certainly no need to go to failure on every exercise or every set. Going to failure can be counterproductive (such as with high-technique work like Oly lifts) and frankly dangerous (such as with squats).

This is a near-duplicate of one or more MA.SE questions: martialarts.stackexchange.com/questions/241/… and martialarts.stackexchange.com/questions/869/… and martialarts.stackexchange.com/questions/704/…

comment How do I train my calf muscles?
@RobinAshe This isn't a topic I'm familiar with, but wouldn't the football players already have exhausted their training stimulus to improve their 40yd dash? Deadlift, power clean, sprint, and do plyos for a few years, and yeah, improving the 40yd dash is hard. What does that show, though?

comment How do I train my calf muscles?
I think it's a great question...but I worry that we don't have anybody who's read or who has the expertise to answer it. I guess making it specific to soccer wouldn't really fix that issue. It's a very deep question that I'd ideally like to see a roundtable of sports trainers tackle :)
