comment Half pull up for the Lats
Interestingly the book you shared says that the Pull movement of the pull up is initiated by rotating the scapula which is done by Rhomboids/lower traps. I find both of these areas as my weak points, any tips to fix these ?

This is a good answer. Safety is of paramount importance.

Grease the Groove and Dave's idea both have merit and I am all set to apply it :-) but the answer to my question.. Lower half pull up or the upper half which works that Lats more ?

@zero-divisor : I think if I have stronger Lats I will do more pullups, right now may be the arms give up before the lats do :(

@DaveLiepmann ,zero-divisor : I think if I have a better mind-muscle connection with the Lats I will be able to do more pullups. Though after doing 30 reps I do feel my lats have worked out well but I am not sure I use them well when I am doing the exercise. I will give you a reason.Like I said I am able to do 5-6 normal pullups, recently a bloke taught me how to do behind the neck pullups and I was able to do 10 of them and I felt like I was pulling more with the Lats but I feel shoulder pain after doing that, so I want to stick to the normal pull up.Goal is to learn to engange my lats more.

@GetFitChimp : I will up vote the answer :-) How to train with this exercise, more Reps, less Reps, how many sets ? I somehow don't get tired doing this no matter what volume.

comment Muscle building exercises without looking like the Hulk, think toned and defined
@MikeDeck : I agree for the strength part but I don't agree if linear progression is possible with eating less. The only option is to gain first and then lose. :-)

@MikeDeck : With due respect Mike, have you read Starting Strength ? There is a rant in it "If you are following the program" where Rippetoe advocates Caloric surplus again and again or may be this rant is on Rippetoes forum. 2nd point is linear progression which is very much emphasized as a part of SS, linear progression stops at a much early stage without caloric surplus. I am not against your answer but it is not perfectly aligned with SS theories. Also the kind of body OP wants is not what SS is more aligned to give. I think Calric surplus and linear progression are very much a part of SS.

Well if he followed Rippetoe's advice he is going to get Big, I have no doubts about that. Linear Progression is related to calorie intake. It is another story if he just picks the exercises and decides against progression. Also Starting strength leaves the core/abs parts unchecked something which someone who wants to look lean would want to consider. It is a great program for most people no doubt.

Yes almost. I added 10 pounds on the bench, 15 pounds on Squats nothing on the rows may be I can deadlift more but I am afraid because of the back pain. Like I said I would deload 5-10 pounds very often get them back and then deload again if I get sick, injured or keep feeling tired for some time. All my gains and strength are from the first 6 months of training and almost zero gains after that. very disappointing :-( I thought this was the case when you start reaching body weight but I see some lifters going on while I might have stalled to an extent.

Thanks Dave. I will take this as the answer and probably take two weeks off straight away and then start close to 30% deloads depending on how I feel. It is frustrating not to be able to make progress for 2-3 months and getting injured. The current injury wakes me up some times in the night while turning on the bed so important to get rid of it.

Thanks Dave, I knew you would be the first to answer on this forum :-) My question is now, how to heal the injured back. It is not worse but has stayed like this for a while. I don't want to take a long break and then start from 150 pounds. I lose strength sooner than others.

Hi Dave, I might have screwed it up around that time. My waistline increased more than what seemed healthy :-( For a month or so I ate less carbs, tried to keep protein same and tried not to add weight on any exercise. I actually lost that belly fat don't know how/why there was no reduction in weight though. I Later tried to increase calories and move to a normal program. Before I tried the normal program I reduced all lifts by 10 pounds to give myself a week to catch up. I think I started failing from them on. Worst is I even look less strong even though I have gained 5 pounds.

@Affe : My pain is very low. Close to the lower Traps I don't think Scalene stretches can help.

I think it was tireness more than soreness. I missed Squat completely some times, never consecutively though. I started at 168lbs body weight. I have never missed a rep on any set may be the 5th rep on the 5th set once in a while but I do 1 rep later if I missed it just to keep myself happy. Also I might have missed 1 workout in some weeks, I always did 2 no matter what. I started off light on most lifts that was close to 7-8 months ago increasing the weight once a week rather than every workout, I made good progress close to 6 months and then wanted to cut some fat.

Erratic food habits is mostly because my job requires going around and meeting people during the day and some times I can not eat for a few hours even though I feel very hungry and than I try to make up for the lost calories in the next meal. I feel hunger is a worse thing while you are training. I added barbell rows because my back lacks the thickness and I have very little middle back, I thought this could help. To improve recovery I tried doing Squats twice a week but I noticed something strange. I could work out well but the soreness would come the 2nd or 3rd day on the legs.

Hi Dave, I have good form on Squats and Deadlifts, I do these in front of the mirror. I try to notice the form some times not all the time. I know Rippetoe suggests not to look in the mirror. I have the book, I have read it once if you have any particular sections to revisit I can do that though I never read the book 2nd time because I found it too informative. I have not really deloaded in the real sense but some times when I struggled with existing weights I brought the numbers down by 5-10 pounds on that lift to keep things going for a while.
