comment Is working out localized muscle going to help burn fat in that area more than building up overall muscle mass?
@DaveLiepmann they are tangentially related; while not supporting spot reduction itself, they provide the background that makes spot reduction possible (i.e. explaining blood flow and lipolysis role in relation to adipose tissue, and also provide baseline SCAT data should you wish to compare the two studies.

@Informaficker edited answer to provide academic sources for claims. Dave, as far as its efficacy, I have not run any numbers to see exactly how much more effective it is. That being said, many of the body building greats swore by spot reduction, including Arnold and Franco, but your mileage may vary XD.

comment Is working out localized muscle going to help burn fat in that area more than building up overall muscle mass?
@FredrikD the losing fat in just the thigh, while a great question, is very specific in scope. This question is much more generic and more helpful to people looking to lose fat in other areas, not necessarily the thighs (even if the answers are near the same).

Amazing answer, +1. As a footnote, I recommend doing squats to parallel. Squats are amazing for the abdominal / core muscles, as well as the posterior chain / lower back. Also, regarding your BF% measurement, there are accurate ways to measure it while you are still alive :). That being said, pin point accuracy isn't necessarily the goal, but rather a consistent measuring device to track approximate progress.

In case you were wondering, this type of mini-routine is called "Strip Sets."

comment Help to add muscle for a skinny guy with fast metabolism
I was in the exact same situation about a year ago, and since then I have gone from 120 to 150 lbs, while also taking off 7% in body fat. I didn't do anything special, either. I just went to the gym MWF for 30-60 minutes, and I ate a lot. Like 2.5k-3.5k calories per day a lot. So, it can be done, just stick with it XD

@DForck42 Given his limited time and specific goals, I felt avoiding squats was the best short-term plan. Long-term, as I noted in my answer, he should be doing squats, but that day is not today.

comment How do different modes of transportation compare from a caloric burn perspective?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I imagine that the gear of the bike would be as big, if not bigger, of a factor than the miles per hour.

comment How much should I exercise given my calorie intake?
The goal is to lose weight, so his actual target caloric range (based off the very source you linked) should be 2000-2500. With a 3000 calorie diet and 500 calorie exercise it is unlikely to promote any fat loss.

comment pistol squats: which kind of barbell squat helps the most
I was able to do pistol squats after following the advice on this video youtu.be/OLEds-vDd5g. The hardest part of this for me was balance and flexibility, not strength, so this may not help you as it did for me.
