comment Should you perform conditioning training until you cannot go on any longer?
I'm not a Fitness Professional and my experience comes from weight training where everything is about recovery so I can't really speak specifically to swimming. I think for the vast majority of people the downsides far outweigh the benefits. If you want to increase speed - why not do sprints or speed drills?

I'm glad you asked this question. I'm in the same situation.

+1 just for this "You should take any health claims made on behalf of either approach with grain of salt."

Just so you know I'm not making the last point up... UAA Runner who froze feet.... Unfortunately both his feet were amputated. Pretty sad story.

This is all great advice, especially the parts about taking hypothermia seriously. The Alaskan Natives have a saying... "the weather goes hunting for people who don't respect it". Respect it.

+1 for your gloves recommendation. If the gloves don't fit snugly there is too much air space for your hands (which are particularly far away from your core and just that much colder) to heat up. Insulating is all about being able to heat air trapped next to your body. Fitment is important!

comment Get rid of running shoe stank?
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I used to leave my running shoes under my desk at work - this has the following advantages: 1) you can get out for a quick run at lunch or after work and 2) the smell keeps people from bothering you, with you know, actual work.

Do you have a favorite brand of fungicide that you would care to recommend?

As an experiment I threw my old pair of Salomon XT Wings in the washer on "delicate" and cold (no bleach). They haven't fallen apart yet and the stink hasn't come back yet (but its neither completely gone)... I'll give it a while and report back.

Haha. Yes. Baking soda, not baking powder.
