I prefer long distance running, but I try to mix in upper-body exercises to compensate for long work days spent behind a desk working as a software architect.

My current weekly training cycle has no particular goals yet, other than improving my overall strength, endurance and fitness.

Can you provide references to back up your claim that "stretching before exercise weakens your muscles and increases risk of injury"?

comment Is its safe to stop between intervals on the treadmill?
How long is your rest period between each sprint? I'd worry more about falling when jumping back on a treadmill that's still running.

The question under debate here is whether it is dangerous to stop abruptly between sprints. All I'm asking is a reference to support your statement, as it would have a large impact on many people. Does it matter how fast you run, or for how long, or how old you are, or how much you weigh? If stopping abruptly is indeed proven to be dangerous for the average human being, then answers to those questions would be essential to know to take the necessary precautions. And what are the dangerous consequences of exceeding those conditions?

That sounds more like a specific condition with your circulatory system, which I strongly recommend you consult with a doctor. I've never seen anyone or heard about anyone suffering in any serious way from stopping a run abruptly--unless other health factors played a role.

Dangerous how? Can you provide some references to back up both of your statements?

comment How to gain weight for a naturally thin person?
Any change in life-style is a long term commitment. For some people, that works better when getting out of the house, trying something new and exciting, and then eventually settling into a stable and solid routine once you find exactly the thing that makes you come back for more week after week...

This is just my personal theory, but I think getting used to eating junk food makes it harder to change the diet once you're done bulking. By maintaining a healthy diet throughout, I do believe it's easier to scale back the diet in the long run

comment How can I train for a 5K while strength training with StrongLifts 5x5 and minimizing detrimental effects on either?
I asked this question a while ago, which is kind of related: fitness.stackexchange.com/questions/1413/… -- I've since then settled into a three days a week routine with 5K (20 to 25 minutes) followed by thorough stretching (10 to 20 minutes) followed by StrongLifts 5X5. I've found that running first works best for me, possibly at the "price" of progressing a little slower with the weights than I potentially could have without running 5Ks just prior

comment Effect of squat and dead lift on long distance running
That's an interesting take. Personally, I experienced my 5K times degrade to 24 minutes or slower, where I had previously consistently been hitting 19 to 20 minutes before I added squat and dead lift to my workout routine. I'm only now slowly converging on 20 minutes again. Granted, 5K is not long distance, but I've also found that I don't feel like running longer distances anymore. I feel the effects of a 10+ mile run getting in the way of lifting weights three times a week. For now, I've chosen to build up strength and settle with 5Ks.

comment Running shoes vs barefoot: which is better for squat and dead lift?
I don't think I could bring myself to wear dress shoes at the gym, but bare feet seems to work great for me.

That's a funny analogy :-) Is the average gym goer really that terrible? It seems to me most of the free weight lifters appear to know what they are doing...

sounds reasonable. I did my weight lifting routine yesterday bare feet and it felt great. The biggest change seemed to be a significantly increased sense of my center of balance. Bare feet seems to be the way to go for me.

I'm not doing squats and dead lift to improve my running, but rather to diversify my exercise routine. I was mostly curious to see if squat and dead lift could have a significant negative impact on running. In addition to squat and dead lift I also do barbell rows, lat pull, bench press and military press on the days where I train with weights. For now, I am aiming for overall fitness, so I plan to stick with lower weight, higher reps, less recovery.

I run three times a week. I added swimming and weight exercises for diversity.
