comment Is a drastic calorie reduction harmful?
According to the online calculator at myfitnesspal, my daily intake was 3950 calories, 389 carbs, 168 fat and 168 protein. I'm still learning how this works but from what I understand, only my caloric intake was unusually high.

comment Is a drastic calorie reduction harmful?
Thank you for your answer. Just a follow up question about the amount of calories I was consuming per day. For a long time I would drink 2 liters of dr pepper a day (800 calories), eat a box of chicken strips (2400 calories) and generally a pizza or some other snack (500 calories), so from what I understand I was easily consuming 4000 calories a day. Those foods were not high in fat and had enough protein and carbs to make me meet my daily levels...

comment How does calcium help protein to be absorbed
Thanks for your answer, some great links! It seems that taking calcium supplements would not aid in preventing osteoporosis then....dang.

@Sancho Please keep in mind due to budget limitations I only have access to an adjustable dumbbell set.

comment Is my current strength building workout good to start off with?
@Sancho Because I'm not looking at gaining a lot of muscle. I just realize that ue to no exercise I am a lot weaker than average. I simply want to get my strength up to a more basic level....I want to stand a chance in an arm wrestle rather than have big muscles or have more strength overall.

I'm not going for vanity or even gaining big muscles, I just realize I have almost on strength due to never doing any exercise or hard work. I basically want to stand a chance in an arm wrestle against the average guy, not be super fit or jacked up. I also only have access to a dumbbell set due to budget limitations.

Also, I am limited in what I have access to because of my budget. I bought an adjustable dumbbell set which is all I really have at the moment.

Hi Berin, thanks for your answer. I'm not interested in big muscles as such, I just realized I have very little strength, much less than my peers due to never really exercising. I'm just trying to get a higher level of strength....so is what I am doing now sufficient? I lift my 15lb dumbbell 10 times in 1 set, wait a bit and do it again, then one more time, and repeat for my other arm. After a few months I should seem some progress?

@MattChan I hope the question is better now. If not, please feel free to remove it entirely. Thanks.

comment Does fat negate protein?
@Sarge how would I tell? I mean for 10 years I don't seem to have gained any fat that is visible at least. Is there a way to test my internal fat level?

comment What are the pros and cons of these 3 types of dumbbells?
Thanks Berin for your great answer. It may be off topic for a question but I guess in a comment it is oK. Do you think the adjustable set for $50 is good value?

@MattChan I did try to add images, but the site uses flash so I couldn't. Should I copy and paste the description for each?

the reason I ask for references is I hear that claim a lot, but I am skeptical of it. I've varied between healthy food and junk food at different phases of my life and felt happy when eating both types. I think there is a lot of FUD being attributed to junk foods, although I can't say for sure.

@Sarge, I don't seem to gain fat at all, so I'm not worried about that.

comment How can I avoid building a lot of muscle while gaining strength
I thought a repetition is the amount of times I would lift the weight. So if I have a very heavy weight I should only lift it 1-3 times? Also, great answer, thanks.

If you can add a reference for food quality relating to mood, restlessness and depression I'd be happy to mark your answer as accepted. I'd also appreciate a reference to junk food lowering oxygen flow.

comment Will soda negate any effects from exercise?
I don't touch diet sodas, so no worries there. In my country sodas don't use HFCS but sugar, so also not too worried there. Looking at pro's and cons of soda it seems I have to manage my sugar intake and otherwise account for weakened bones, which I can do with supplements. After looking into it I feel like the risk is often exaggerated, at least for non-diet sugar based sodas. Thanks again for your answer.

Thanks for your answer. Could you clarify what I should consider light? would 10kg be too little or too much for example?

comment Will soda negate any effects from exercise?
Thanks for your answer. Aspartame is only in diet sodas, or is it in all? The main effects you list seem to be potentially weakened bones and dehydration. Can they be circumvented by drinking sufficient water and taking calcium supplemented? My goal is to build bicep muscle.
