Not trying to be sarcastic...but I have strong feelings about focusing on the primary lifts :)

@DanAndrews - if 'standard' (non smith machine) squats are better for you - why not focus on them? I know we should do many different things, but shouldn't we focus on the primary lifts and use accessory lifts secondary? FredikD wanted my opinion regarding smith machines (anything to add)...and my base feeling is that the best exercise that you can do is a standard back squat...then if you have time: dead lifts, bench, overhead press, rows...and if you have energy after that - overhead squats, front squats, rack pulls...and if you have energy after that hill sprints

FredrikD - don't use a smith machine (simple answer). Here's a link to why: stronglifts.com/smith-machine-squats-power-rack-free-weights

comment cant do push-ups
I would imagine that you would UNLESS you have any long term medical condition (but I would highly suspect that you just pulled or tore something and time heals those things). Never give up

comment Cable pull throughs as alternatives to traditional deadlifts
Why are you looking for an alternative? Is it a location restriction (you don't have the room or ability to deadlift where you are), physical (you have a physical limitation like a lower back problem) or equipment (you just don't have a barbell)?

comment Mitigate workout exhaustion
@ErikAigner - 1g per body weight per day (so if you're 200 lbs, it's 200 grams) - sounds like a lot AND it is. I use creatine pre workout only.

comment Needing some tips on toning up
@Jessica - You took the biggest step, know it's more tough work to get your plan together and follow it. I would start by learning all the basic lifts (deadlift, squat, bench, press) and practicing them for 2-3 weeks (you'll never stop learning how to improve on them). During that time look into the various weight lifting plans (5x5 starting strenght, madcow, 5/3/1) - pick one- and stick with it for 2-3 month min....never give up, never look back and never put yourself in position where you'll get hurt and not be able to train the next day. let us know how it goes - GOOD LUCK

comment How long do I wait after a failed lift?
@ssteinberg - that was it for the day, believe me! My questions is, do I wait a week, month, etc. prior to reattempting the lift?
