Is it a good idea to use an exercise ball as a chair? I'm actually using a swiss ball as a chair 1/2 of the day. There is a transition period and you need to 'listen to your body' and switch back to the chair as needed. Overall I (and the group with me doing this) have found that sitting on a swiss ball does seem to help with back strain and does seem to work the core throughout the time being on it. |

Should one generally avoid machines in favor of free weights? JoJo - great and deep answer.I'm a firm believer in free weights for beginners and more strength focused workouts, since they tend to give a better overall workout - making the body work the way it would in real life BUT realize the use of machines for specific (hate to use the work - weak spot) focus. I think the people you've listed/quoted above say about the same thing... |

What are some free weight exercises to isolate hamstrings? The original questions was how to work the hamstring...I agree with many exercise sites/books in that Squats (and dead lifts) are probably the best overall exercise for hamstrings and surrounding muscles, tendons and bones. |

What are some free weight exercises to isolate hamstrings? @JoJo - It's the movement of the knee - muscles to tendons to bone (right? I'm not a Dr. or expert here) - here's a simple interactive site: jointreconstruction.com/kneeinjury/kneerec.htm |

How to incorporate cardio in to a barbell routine? @Robert - can you provide the specifics of your A/B split (set/reps/weight - rest period). I still think a reduced rest period could be the answer |

How can I make exercise more interesting? @jprete - losing weight (or more appropriately body fat) is something you can measure easily (scale, pinch an inch, how you fit in clothes) - where being 'fit' is a little more obscure. I would recommend setting SMART goals (S = simple, M = Measurable, A = attainable, R = realistic and T= timed, within a given timeframe) |
