comment Is it a good idea to use an exercise ball as a chair?
I'm actually using a swiss ball as a chair 1/2 of the day. There is a transition period and you need to 'listen to your body' and switch back to the chair as needed. Overall I (and the group with me doing this) have found that sitting on a swiss ball does seem to help with back strain and does seem to work the core throughout the time being on it.

comment Should one generally avoid machines in favor of free weights?
JoJo - great and deep answer.I'm a firm believer in free weights for beginners and more strength focused workouts, since they tend to give a better overall workout - making the body work the way it would in real life BUT realize the use of machines for specific (hate to use the work - weak spot) focus. I think the people you've listed/quoted above say about the same thing...

comment What are some free weight exercises to isolate hamstrings?
The original questions was how to work the hamstring...I agree with many exercise sites/books in that Squats (and dead lifts) are probably the best overall exercise for hamstrings and surrounding muscles, tendons and bones.

@JoJo - It's the movement of the knee - muscles to tendons to bone (right? I'm not a Dr. or expert here) - here's a simple interactive site: jointreconstruction.com/kneeinjury/kneerec.htm

comment How to incorporate cardio in to a barbell routine?
@Robert - can you provide the specifics of your A/B split (set/reps/weight - rest period). I still think a reduced rest period could be the answer

comment How can I make exercise more interesting?
@jprete - losing weight (or more appropriately body fat) is something you can measure easily (scale, pinch an inch, how you fit in clothes) - where being 'fit' is a little more obscure. I would recommend setting SMART goals (S = simple, M = Measurable, A = attainable, R = realistic and T= timed, within a given timeframe)
