Day off from training…how to mentally relax I like the list of warning signs - some of them I fall into (working out alone, working out injured/sick) - and I know you're right about where the stress is coming from...but, the the day off from exercising seems to be adding to it |

Day off from training…how to mentally relax @Ryan - part of the plan, I feel I could do 7 days...even when I feel a little tired, but choose not to....... |

Day off from training…how to mentally relax I don't think I'm at a point where I need a therapist.....if I was working out 7 days a week, 2 times a day...then I would (if I had the energy) seek help |

Day off from training…how to mentally relax @Ryan - anxiety mostly - I do east less, but that's just because I'm not burning/hungry as much |

Improving my Bench Press - what muscles are used during what phase? great articles - two good points: plyometric training to increase off-chest power (I think that could be it) and eccentric focus (letting it down slow)...thanks! |

Improving my Bench Press - what muscles are used during what phase? If I can identify the muscles/weak points, I would train them separately. I've been working on form and went from 180 to 220 in a week (clean single bench press) - now I'm looking to take it to the next level (over time of course) |

I want to run but have a bad knee. How should I deal with it? @gunbuster363 - the cost of a blown acl or serious knee injury is more than the cost of a Dr's visit with xray |

Can I do push ups every day? @gruszczy - Great news! What do you think did it? |

Buying barbell / rack I agree with Sparafusile - look on Craigslist - there's a lot of people who've brought weights and have never used them. I would recommend a month or two at a local gym to get the feel of the weights and get some personal training on them (sounds like your new to lifting). You'll need a weight lifting program which the personal trainer could help with. Good luck and go for it. |

Can I do push ups every day? @gruszczy -3 months is a long time. The problem with body weight exercises is that you can' take weight off - HOWEVER - you can modify the pushup by doing them inclined (against a bench for instance) - so, push to 65, incline and do 10 more. I had (and currently have) some plateau issues and it's 90% mental...sometimes we just put a mental block in front of us. SO - 65 regular + 10 incline and each week push one or two more regular ones in. |

Can I do push ups every day? @gruszczy - how long have you been at 65 in a single set? and how long have you been doing push ups? (looks like your at 130 per day) |

Can I do push ups every day? are you doing 65 in one shot? or in sets? try doing sets of 20, taking anywhere from 1 to 2 minutes breaks inbetween and see if you can past 65 - if not increase the rest period |

Is maintaining really so bad? @Berin - I was taught the most important area to develop in the martial arts was 'heart' - aka: it's the size of the fight in the dog not the size of the dog in the fight...strength, technique, speed all are secondary to that. |

Proper way to do the Dead Bug I'm not sure if there's any 'right' way - if you're not feeling it try holding light weights in your hand. I do it with my feet off the floor and hands off the floor and focus/tension on my core/abs... |

Is it a good idea to use an exercise ball as a chair? I'm actually using a swiss ball as a chair 1/2 of the day. There is a transition period and you need to 'listen to your body' and switch back to the chair as needed. Overall I (and the group with me doing this) have found that sitting on a swiss ball does seem to help with back strain and does seem to work the core throughout the time being on it. |

Should one generally avoid machines in favor of free weights? JoJo - great and deep answer.I'm a firm believer in free weights for beginners and more strength focused workouts, since they tend to give a better overall workout - making the body work the way it would in real life BUT realize the use of machines for specific (hate to use the work - weak spot) focus. I think the people you've listed/quoted above say about the same thing... |

What are some free weight exercises to isolate hamstrings? The original questions was how to work the hamstring...I agree with many exercise sites/books in that Squats (and dead lifts) are probably the best overall exercise for hamstrings and surrounding muscles, tendons and bones. |

What are some free weight exercises to isolate hamstrings? @JoJo - It's the movement of the knee - muscles to tendons to bone (right? I'm not a Dr. or expert here) - here's a simple interactive site: jointreconstruction.com/kneeinjury/kneerec.htm |
