Getting stronger without gaining muscle Get your body fat to 7% so you can gain more muscle! Or even better, don't limit yourself and put on 10kg of muscle and compete in the next category ;). |

Body fat loss halted. Anyone have experience getting under 8% body fat? Interesting about the vitamin D. Some of the shredded lads I know take a lot of vitamin D. Will check out the podcast. |

Body fat loss halted. Anyone have experience getting under 8% body fat? @DaveLiepmann you've hit the nail on the head. That's because we have bumped one of the many factors that affect metabolism and energy consumption equation. More food - +TEF (Thermic Effect of Food), +BMR (basal metabolic rate). More weight training - (TEA, SPA, NEAT). It begs the question - how does one summarise the effect of eating more quality food and training like an animal in terms of specific body composition goals? I don't feel I'm any closer really to be able to formulate solid advice for someone. I've certainly stopped saying "eat less than you burn"! |

Body fat loss halted. Anyone have experience getting under 8% body fat? Not true. I have never taken steroids and the crowd I train with get hundreds of people per year loosing fat and gaining muscle (www.biologiclabs.com.au) at the same time. I found a website that explains how it is possible. What do you think? scoobysworkshop.com/gain-muscle-lose-fat |

Visceral fat or poor abdominal muscles? I down voted it and left a comment. The answer starts by stating there is no way to distinguish between visceral fat and poor abdominal muscles. There clearly is since visceral fat is internal. Furthermore if pinch tests aren't accurate enough for you, you can get a DXA scan and get a very accurate body composition profile. Aside from subcutaneous (not visceral) fat covering the muscle, abdominals vary greatly genetically. Some have more smooth and others have more stand out abs. Because of this, some people can get to 12% and have pronounced abs. Others have to get to 6%. |

Body fat loss halted. Anyone have experience getting under 8% body fat? If I had sustained a negative caloric intake, I wouldn't have put on 6kg of muscle in the last 6 months. This is where there is a big hole in my understanding. Since the intensity of my training triggered an adaptive response to the body I have today, (fat loss + muscle gain), maybe I need to increase the intensity of my training (somehow) to induce a further improvement in body composition? My training intensity has plateaued a bit for sure.. |

Visceral fat or poor abdominal muscles? @medmal skin folds (via skin callipers) are still very prevalent and the cheapest preferred method of body fat calculation amongst trainers. The actual calculated body fat percentage has been shown to be a bit off, but measuring the skin folds and seeing the millimetres shrink over time is invaluable for assessing training/diet needs. |

Are ab exercises more usefull to reduce belly fat than other exercises? +1 @JohnP that said, studies show even though 'weight loss' is the same for high protein diets and low calorie diets (with identical calories), the body composition of the high protein dieters was more favourable. In other words they lost MORE fat and kept MORE muscle than the other control group. Thats why it is important to talk about body composition and not just weight loss which is ambiguous. |

Deadlifting yesterday gave me pain in my lats. What is the proper posture for deadlifting to avoid this? No @DaveLiepmann I've never studied it actually. I just know people sometimes get hernias when lifting things. Since a deadlift/squat is the heaviest thing you are ever going to lift, it makes sense to get some protection. Whenever I forget my belt and deadlift without it, I always get personal trainers coming up to me asking me to wear a belt. See if you can find a powerlifter competing without a belt!! |

Deadlift - belt or no belt? Hernia anyone!!? My max is 510 and I definitely want to use a belt as I'm forcing all my intestines against my stomach wall. Each to their own. |

Deadlifting yesterday gave me pain in my lats. What is the proper posture for deadlifting to avoid this? It is dangerous to deadlift without a belt because of potential herniation of the stomach or back lining! I don't think its a thing that can really be decided for personal preference. If you are lifting light (up to about 300 pounds) you could probably get away with it but any more than that and you are forcing too much pressure against your abdominal wall. I've lifted 465 with no gear just to see if I could do it (and I could). It doesn't make any difference in your strength, it just makes you more confident that you won't break something. |
