@StupidOne yes it defies common sense that if you eat a certain type of STAPLE food for long period of time it is bad for your body. Some cultures pretty much only eat protein and fat (Inuit, etc). I was so happy to read the latest research coming out. Unfortunately old myths die hard. I still occasionally hear people talking about the "dangers" of eating too many eggs. Eek!

@WalterMaier-Murdnelch I don't think referencing an article from a dude that devoted his PHD to protein metabolism is out of line. The references to the journal articles he uses are right there at the bottom of his article for everyone to see.

@RobinAshe the cutting edge programs of today are hybrid strength/hypotrophy programs. simplyshredded.com/…

@RobinAshe high protein being bad for your kidneys is a MYTH. Unless you have suffer from renal failure, and your body is not working properly, protein can actually help with kidney function. Why do we continue to propagate these myths? Let me guess, your next sentence is that high dietary cholesterol is the blame for a systemic increase in LDL?

@RobinAshe whats 'bulk'? Is it a 3rd adjustable tissue type? Up until now I thought that there was only fat and muscle. How does one 'sculpt down' besides lose fat to reveal muscle?

@RobinAshe I think there is nothing wrong with the kind of program the OP is on in terms of structure. Are you proposing that the only way to get stronger is to do 5 reps or less? I wouldn't dream of doing 5 reps a couple years ago when I was starting out. I blindly did 8-12 reps (like all the other dummys) and started on the 35 lb dumbbells and eventually started pressing the 110 pounders. How is that possible that I was able to get stronger without training in the strength rep range? Furthermore, even if you are right, the OP wants to put muscle on and doesn't care about strength.

@RobinAshe no - I'm always learning. Please tell me the physiological mechanisms on reshaping muscle tissue other than enlarging it.

@RobinAshe I certainly won't. I don't follow what 'the pros' do. Their advice makes up the contradicting muscle mag hogwash. The 'pros' are genetically gifted for one which is why they are pros. Schwarzenegger was so big because he trained through thresholds of unbelievable pain. Most of us would never push ourselves half that much. His intensity was unparalleled at the time. Just because he felt he was "sculpting" his body doesn't make it true. lablaundry.blogspot.com.au/2010_10_01_archive.html

@user981916 taking as long as you like (within reason) between sets helps you focus on getting the most STRENGTH out of every set to induce the maximum ADAPTIVE response from your body. You want to try to keep your calculated rep maxes constant across sets (not always possible). Arms respond better to fatigue induced hypotrophy and therefore try to keep breaks to 2 minutes or less on them.

@RiMMER telling someone to forget tempo nonsense and focus on RESULTS in the form of increased reps/weight is GREAT advice.

@RobinAshe could you please post a scientific reference (no broscience please) as to how you can 'sculpt' the shape of a muscle beyond simply enlarging it?

@user981916 it has been shown that intensity spikes burn more calories than an even heart-rate. My guess is you are there to achieve the hardest part of body recomposition. Build muscle. Trying to do two things at once often results in doing neither well :/.
