comment Is it necessary to eat fewer carbs in order to lose weight?
@JoJo - You are quite ill-informed. PRACTICALLY speaking, since it is impossible for an average Joe to measure their BMR and other factors that MOSTLY contribute to the calories burning, telling someone to 'simply' burn more than they consume is a wild goose chase. Exercise is the only directly controllable factor and yet you state that it is a mere 20%. What Codebolt said is exactly right and I myself have had the identical experience. Years of under eating gave me a body far from my goals. Stepping up my calories (mostly from fats/proteins) is what got me to 8% bf.

@MeadeRubenstein "don't go to failure" - terrible advice for someone looking for gains.

comment What can a vegetarian eat on a low carb diet?
Are you referring to the Ketone diet? If you are, its about high FATS, LOW protein, and pretty much zero carbs. Its great for rapid fat loss but cannot be considered a long term eating plan.

@MeadeRubenstein Standard squats without exercise balls should be below parallel (hip joint lower than your knee joint). This is for both for minimising biomechanical stress on the joints, successfully competing in most powerlifting competitions, and for maximum quad hypotrophy.

Excellent advice for your average joe trying to lose weight.

comment What changes between the 5 rep range and the 10 rep range?
I'm sorry @DaveLiepmann but that makes no sense. According to my 1 rep max formula I train with, I have to (and can) lift 8 reps of 180kg (80% of my 1 rep max) to reach 225kg (my 1 rep max) on deadlifts. I don't think that means I'm a "slow-twitch guy" - it merely means the formula I use for deadlifts is quite accurate!

+1 @Sancho. Most guys in the gym do 90° and its virtually a partial squat in my opinion.

+1 nicely said.

Weight loss and strength gain do NOT have to be mutually exclusive programs. They have only become that way because personal trainers have no clue what they are doing.

Eating breakfast (complete with protein) will help to kick start your metabolism for the rest of the day.

@Chelonian I would not consider this "high reps". The hypotrophy rep ranges can go up to 20 (higher for legs).

I'm interested to hear more about the shrinking fat cells vs the burning of them. I had no idea there was a difference?

I believe that the 'maximum quotas' of protein we all hear about refer to the amount that the body can assimilate into tissue. Your body can manufacture glucose from excess protein for general energy as well. The protein quota ideology comes from the carbohydrate centric food pyramid era. Excellent advice though.

@JohnP your exactly right. People are starting to find the link between exccesive glucose in your diet (from carbs) and inflammatory based illnesses like heart disease and high cholesterol. Saturated fat actually helps to LOWER cholesterol. Whenever I hear people talk about the virtues of high carbs and low fat I just have a hand to head moment. Stuck in the dark ages.

The journal articles have been showing that while high protein diet people lose pretty much the same as someone on a low calorie diet, their body composition improved significantly. This is the key to the success of the high protein diet. You keep most of your metabolism pumping/fat burning muscle. Calorie deficient diets lose equal amounts of each. You end up a skinny/fat person with a terrible metabolism on traditional diets.

"Bonking" as you refer to it only happened with me when I was on a low carb program WHILST eating insufficient calories. I now eat my 3000 (50% protein) and I have never felt better energy wise. I don't even need pre-workout drinks or anything before I train.

Wow people still believe that low carb is harmful in 2012? People confuse lowER (in comparison to the carb rich diets of our largely overweight populations today) with the ketone diet (zero carb). There IS debate over the long term effects of a zero carb diet (using ketones as opposed to glucose as the primary fuel source) but not much at all over the efficacy and benefits of a lowER carb diet.
