Less weight and more reps or heavier weight and less reps? @Informaficker that was an arrogant response. Please apologise to Popeye. It was his first post by the looks of it. |

Does the optimal hypertrophy rep range apply to tired muscles? Argh.. I misspelled it once and now my dictionary 'corrects' it to the other one. Noted and corrected. Thanks @JackP. Its not 'messing' around. It is a technique that combines bodybuilding and powerlifting training for great results in strength and size to achieve rapid body recomposition. |

Arching the back during bench press Be careful placing PT's word as gospel. Most PTs have done a 10 week course (or less) and virtually know nothing). Focusing on a contraction of the torso (abs) would possibly bring the head up (which is the number one no-no) as you strain to push out that last rep. You should definitely keep your shoulders and butt on the bench. |

How is muscle repair affected by a caloric deficit? Could you estimate your calorie intake and give me your rough weight/body fat condition please? |

What are the trade-offs of weight versus repetition? I continue to be amazed at your insightful and thorough answers. Well done @DaveLiepmann. Serious question though - are you on the Starting Strength franchise payroll? |

What is the scientific explanation for beginning weightlifters' ability to gain muscle and lose fat simultaneously? Absolute hogwash. I'm an 'intermediate/advanced' and I lose fat and gain muscle almost every week. So does pretty much everyone else that trains hard and bothers to get their body composition measured weekly. The fault is the premise of calories in/out being a simple chemical process. As for your discussion on different days having different results - I eat the same calories exactly every day. |

Trainer told me to do 5 sets of 5 deadlifts. Should I be worried? @DaveLiepmann yes I agree with you. Doing what I do is very hard mentally physically month after month. For a novice lifter I would definitely recommend a 5x5 or 5x4 type program. |

Getting stronger without gaining muscle Get your body fat to 7% so you can gain more muscle! Or even better, don't limit yourself and put on 10kg of muscle and compete in the next category ;). |

Body fat loss halted. Anyone have experience getting under 8% body fat? @DaveLiepmann you've hit the nail on the head. That's because we have bumped one of the many factors that affect metabolism and energy consumption equation. More food - +TEF (Thermic Effect of Food), +BMR (basal metabolic rate). More weight training - (TEA, SPA, NEAT). It begs the question - how does one summarise the effect of eating more quality food and training like an animal in terms of specific body composition goals? I don't feel I'm any closer really to be able to formulate solid advice for someone. I've certainly stopped saying "eat less than you burn"! |

Body fat loss halted. Anyone have experience getting under 8% body fat? Not true. I have never taken steroids and the crowd I train with get hundreds of people per year loosing fat and gaining muscle (www.biologiclabs.com.au) at the same time. I found a website that explains how it is possible. What do you think? scoobysworkshop.com/gain-muscle-lose-fat |

Visceral fat or poor abdominal muscles? I down voted it and left a comment. The answer starts by stating there is no way to distinguish between visceral fat and poor abdominal muscles. There clearly is since visceral fat is internal. Furthermore if pinch tests aren't accurate enough for you, you can get a DXA scan and get a very accurate body composition profile. Aside from subcutaneous (not visceral) fat covering the muscle, abdominals vary greatly genetically. Some have more smooth and others have more stand out abs. Because of this, some people can get to 12% and have pronounced abs. Others have to get to 6%. |

Body fat loss halted. Anyone have experience getting under 8% body fat? If I had sustained a negative caloric intake, I wouldn't have put on 6kg of muscle in the last 6 months. This is where there is a big hole in my understanding. Since the intensity of my training triggered an adaptive response to the body I have today, (fat loss + muscle gain), maybe I need to increase the intensity of my training (somehow) to induce a further improvement in body composition? My training intensity has plateaued a bit for sure.. |
