I have a Bachelor's in Exercise Science with a concentration in Wellness and Cardiac Rehabilitation. I am currently earning my Masters in both Healthcare and Business Administration.
I spent all of my high school years involved in sports (tennis, track, cross country, swimming ) and my college years involved in fencing, swimming, and being a gym-rat. I spent my first year post-college in a competitive cycling shop. I then became part of a hospital system where I continue to run a Wellness Gym, perform various screenings, educate staff and the public on various health issues, and provide counselling for those that need help.

Wide grip pull-ups vs “normal” pull-ups Correct zero, shoulder width grip has the most range of motion for the lat muscles. The origin for the Latissimus Dorsi are the lower thoracic vertebrae and the Illiac crest (hip bone) while the insertion is on the back side of the humerus. This means the greatest range of motion for the lats occur when your hands are over your head. |

Wide grip pull-ups vs “normal” pull-ups The range of motion is less, but the exercise is more intense for your lats. Think of wide-grip pull-ups as isolation pull-ups. People tend to cheat normal pull-ups, and while you still can cheat on wide-grip it is harder. |

Wide grip pull-ups vs “normal” pull-ups Berin is correct. Just didn't want to make it too convoluted. |

Cardio vs. Weight lifting. Which one is better for losing weight? Eevar, if you are eating candy bars you aren't trying to lose weight. While your point is taken, the calories could be better spent. Berin is correct though. To add to this conversation, The more muscle you have the more fat you burn at rest and during exercise. His routine would be one that I would recommend for one of my patients asking the same question. |

It's really difficult to exercise my triceps, could use some suggestions! Do they hurt when you do ANY tricep exercises? Or just the overhead presses? Also, do you use one hand at a time or both on the weight? |

Suggested Protein/Fat/Carb Ratio? John P. Thanks for the referral to wikipedia of fitness sites. Here is a link to a peer reviewed article that states, "The inability to consume enough calories to meet energy requirements is a common threat to survival. To meet this danger, animals retard their fuel depletion by lowering their metabolic rate..." nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJM199706193362507 My second is not misleading. There are very few ways the body can burn fat without consuming carbs. One is your body breaks down muscle (not ideal). Your insulin response theory is correct if you were to eat carbs only. |

Should I run everyday or alternate days and run longer? Again, it depends on what you want to get out of the exercise, and where you are starting. To really see the minimum benefit one should exercise at least 3 days a week for at least 30 minutes each time. This ensures that your cardio-respiratory system is receiving benefits from your exercise. I hope this addresses your question Ivo |
