Used to swim competitively, now I play futsal, spearfish, and do a little running here and there.

comment Eating Only Cereals at Night?
I'd recommend dropping the sugar without replacing the sweetener.. losing fat while maintaining a sweet tooth makes the job a lot harder. A change of taste is very important - get into complex grains!

comment How do I track improvement in my box jump?
Yeah, plain vertical jumps might just be better. Do you still think it's good to do serious training via box jumping? You definitely can't push as hard doing it, and I think adding weights would be too dangerous. Also that looks like a good contraption, though I imagine with a bit of creativity you could do it for cheap (e.g. black rope, chalk on hands).

comment Is there any research showing how effective HIIT (specifically stationary bike) is for fat loss?
I think making it relative to energy use is skewing the results. Most HIIT I know, e.g. tabata, use a lot less energy than an endurance workout. I'm also skeptical of that result, as I've read more that says lower intensity is better for burning fat.

comment How do I know if I'm training too hard?
Thank you for listing out the symptoms! I pretty much had these memorised during the competitive days, it was so important to keep them in mind.

comment How should I train to increase my push-up maximum from 20 to two sets of 100?
@LegoStormtrooper I've always been taught the importance of training both directions of motion/opposite muscle groups. I really think this should be coupled with horizontal pull ups. From what I've seen from athletes, the best way for them to boost a specialised activity often involves a broader range of activities. Balanced exercise is probably what I mean by holistic. Lifting isn't a must, but I'd say balanced muscle conditioning is.

comment How do I gain weight as a vegan?
@Baarn Personally I'd prefer a radical change to leaving the question as is and have it closed - the answers were very informative to me. I dislike that rule about StackExchange. Look at our highest voted question - "Exercises for Programmers" - that got closed. People clearly love it, yet we decide to reject that format.

+1 for "Go ahead and win it, but do it by making yourself awesome instead of valuing foolish grandstanding". Nice job of pointing the OP in a better direction.

@LegoStormtrooper Do we really want to be advocating non-holistic fitness? This proposed regime would eventually lead to some muscle problems. Also as you said, it becomes more of an endurance exercise - this makes cross-training more viable. Like some front crawl swimming.

comment How do I gain weight as a vegan?
I've completely reworded this question in attempt to save it. I think the core of it (bulking diet for a vegan) is on-topic and quite interesting, it just needed some drastic changes! Don't know if someone can approve the edit.

If you go this way, enjoy the hunchback build that comes from just doing chest workouts...

comment How often does running or weight lifting cause capillary bursts?
Great question, and welcome to Physical Fitness! I'm wondering if this question is edging too much towards medical rather than fitness. I've suggested a new title - "How often does running or weight lifting cause capillary bursts?" - I think it would help make the scope of the question more fitness-orientated rather than medical.

comment What is tabata? How effective is it?
Good to see the link. It's a shame that the uncertainty of the results is so substantial: 53 +/- 5 to 58 +/-3 versus an increase of 7 is far from reliable data. I've just discovered Tabata, and it would be great to see some more substantial research on this craze.

comment Bad to run in the smoke?
I was going to say that Abe should consider running with a breathing mask on, but as you mentioned, smoke affects not just your lungs but eyes as well. Join a gym for the month and use one of the cardio machines there (spinning, treadmill - your choice). Don't want to go 1-2 weeks without exercise.

comment What is the difference between swimming and running?
As a general comment on picking exercise forms, it's good to go with what you enjoy more as long as it's a worthy form of exercise. Even if running was a bit better (swimming is the best!), I'd say still swim because you enjoy it more. What will be more effective at getting you out of bed at 6 AM to workout?

comment Running and six pack abs
@weber Yeah definitely. It's just really important to get swimming right. Don't just jump in the pool and swim laps until your tired - do sets, and go hard so that your heart rate is seriously elevated for a good length of time. Also, I really think that cross training is the best. So maybe 2 swim sessions, and 2 run/cycle sessions. All-round fitness is the best.

@Marcx Congratulations on achieving the first step - low body fat - now you need to build up muscle. Running a lot and being lightweight isn't going to get you there, you need to now focus more on muscle building exercises and a good protein intake. Have a look at my answer for more detail.
