I'm a software engineer.

I started training with weights seriously about three years ago when my coworkers got me into CrossFit. Before that I'd been seriously into yoga.

I am by no means an expert but I am continually educating myself on fitness, and training myself. My ideal physique is strong and "functional". I want it all: strength, power, speed, and endurance. The only sport I play is tennis.

BW: 173lbs Bodyfat: ~13-14%

Current best lifts as of Dec. 2012 (in pounds):

315 back squat (ass to grass)
385 deadlift
145 shoulder press
145 overhead squat
225 squat clean
14 strict pullups

That's not the Valsalva maneuver. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valsalva_maneuver

comment Can you overtrain?
+1 for the links. I didn't know that overtraining was a controversial topic. The next time I hit a "dark time", I will try powering through instead of backing off.

@Doc Training six hours per day is not even close to the same thing as doing a single workout session that spans six hours of work sets. Also, in general, what the best strength athletes in the world are doing at the peak of their conditioning is basically irrelevant to what novice and intermediate lifters do.

It's your vote, do what you want with it. That's a Rip quote though.

comment Why do deadlifts make my obliques sore?
Grats on the PR! I just hit one today. And yes I am going to be sore everywhere tomorrow. I don't know what specifically about the deadlift works obliques.

comment How do I do a proper situp?
A GHD, or "Glute Ham Developer" is a bench that allows you to anchor your feet and cantilever your body horizontally. Here's a vide of a guy using a such a machine to do a GHD situp. youtube.com/watch?v=pMS2dU0FuPk

You most likely have trigger point in your supraspinatus on the side with the messed up shoulder. I've fixed several biker's shoulder issues by massaging those trigger points.

Agree. These exercises do major work on the abdominals: front squats, pullups (with stabilized body), front lever, toes to bar, knees to elbow, GHD benchpress, GHD situps, jerks, and overhead squats. The abs should be worked isometrically.
