I'm a software engineer.

I started training with weights seriously about three years ago when my coworkers got me into CrossFit. Before that I'd been seriously into yoga.

I am by no means an expert but I am continually educating myself on fitness, and training myself. My ideal physique is strong and "functional". I want it all: strength, power, speed, and endurance. The only sport I play is tennis.

BW: 180lbs Bodyfat: ~13-14%

Current best lifts as of Dec. 2013(in pounds):

345 back squat (ass to grass)
405 deadlift
145 shoulder press
145 overhead squat
225 squat clean
14 strict pullups

comment How to keep your weight from rising (after lowering it) without a strict diet forever?
My ex-roommate lost about eighty pounds and achieved a normal body composition by eating a Wild Willy's hamburger and milkshake every day for a year. (And fasting at all other times). I'm serious. But, if you don't agree, that's fine. Post an answer and it to the mix. You're wrong, dead fucking wrong, but that's your prerogative.

I don't agree, @DrewStephens. I think calories in, calories out is one of the most well-established and reliable principles in all of the health sciences. Someone will always be ready to sell a book telling people the things they want to hear about dieting. That isn't a significant reason to believe them.

That's not the Valsalva maneuver. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valsalva_maneuver

comment Can you overtrain?
+1 for the links. I didn't know that overtraining was a controversial topic. The next time I hit a "dark time", I will try powering through instead of backing off.

comment Is it necessary to do flat, incline and decline flys?
@Doc Training six hours per day is not even close to the same thing as doing a single workout session that spans six hours of work sets. Also, in general, what the best strength athletes in the world are doing at the peak of their conditioning is basically irrelevant to what novice and intermediate lifters do.

It's your vote, do what you want with it. That's a Rip quote though.

comment Why do deadlifts make my obliques sore?
Grats on the PR! I just hit one today. And yes I am going to be sore everywhere tomorrow. I don't know what specifically about the deadlift works obliques.

A GHD, or "Glute Ham Developer" is a bench that allows you to anchor your feet and cantilever your body horizontally. Here's a vide of a guy using a such a machine to do a GHD situp. youtube.com/watch?v=pMS2dU0FuPk

comment Can I cycle or run with shoulder niggles?
You most likely have trigger point in your supraspinatus on the side with the messed up shoulder. I've fixed several biker's shoulder issues by massaging those trigger points.

comment How do I do a proper situp?
Agree. These exercises do major work on the abdominals: front squats, pullups (with stabilized body), front lever, toes to bar, knees to elbow, GHD benchpress, GHD situps, jerks, and overhead squats. The abs should be worked isometrically.

comment Can I gain weight in a healthy way without any strength training?
This is just wrong information. If you don't train then the only kind of weight you can gain is fat.

That's amusing. The best, and most important, answer that I've made on this site is the only one that's been downvoted. Why?

T is well-known to raise lean mass gains.

I can't get full text on 4. 5 is terrible study as well. It uses a survey followed by a single T assay to correlate sexual activity with high T. But there are many cofounding factors here. For one, people with naturally high T are probably more likely to have a lot of sex or masturbate. This doesn't mean masturbation raises T, which is the unfortunate conclusion that the authors have drawn.

This is incorrect. Links 2 and 3 above are not peer reviewed journals and don't properly cite any peer reviewed articles either, but three describes a study that only looked 10 hours past an orgasm event.
