@MartyWallace You have to do more than just forcing your knees straight while standing on the train. Please see my latest (edited) answer.

comment Is it necessary to warm up before doing a modest number of push ups?
If you are doing push-ups first thing in the morning right after you get our of bed, then the answer is absolutely yes. The warm-up could be jumping jacks. However, if you are doing push-ups during the day (after you showered and already at work, etc.), then the answer is not necessary.

comment Half pull up for the Lats
@Geek You may want to start adding exercises that will isolate your scapulae a little more. For example, you can try 3 sets of 15-20 reps (3-5 lbs) of Stability Ball Prone T's and Y's. Try to focus on squeezing your scapulaes together, instead of trying to lift your arms up higher. I treat lots of overhead athletes, and this is a very common problem that I see. You also should try the push-up plus to strengthen your Sarratus Anterior as this is one of the most important scapulae stabilizer muscles. Hope this helps!

@zero-divisor Let me edit my anwer to clarify this situation. I did read over your questions like 20 times. Maybe I'm looking into this question too deep. Lol!

comment Why is the single leg deadlift stiff-legged?
@zero-divisor You are correct regarding the paper. The paper is to prove the muscle recruitment when doing stiff-legged deadlifts. With this evidence, I thought I also gave you my reasoning for the "single leg exercises to include single leg stiff-legged deadlift. Please let me know if I'm not understanding your questions.

@Rodney You made a great point, but I think JohnP is correct. Please read the physical fitness faq for more information. Here is an article you can read to find out the answers regarding CLA for yourself ajcn.nutrition.org/content/85/5/1203.full.pdf

comment Need exercise recommendations for abs, triceps and biceps to incorporate into Stronglifts 5x5
@MarcoLeblanc I agree with your statement. It's not subjective at all. EMG studies show that combo lifts like rows and pull-ups/chin-ups activate biceps tremendously. Although these lifts are not as bicep-isolated when comparing to bicep curls per se; however, we are able to lift a lot more weights when we do rows, pull-ups/chin-ups. Thus, our biceps actually develop quiet well with combo lifts over time due to the fact that it is easier to increase more load with these lifts (more muscles assisting). This will result in more muscle mass, assuming with proper rest and nutrition.

comment Can I do cardio exercises after an appendicitis operation?
Although it's been 15 weeks, and you and I both know that it may be safe to start on some sort of an exercise program. I would strongly suggest for you to give him a call to make sure that you got an "OK" to do so. If anything, he can at least recommend you to see a trainer or a physical therapist, etc. Good luck!

comment What can I do to prevent my (outer) shins from tightening while running?
@AkinOkegbile I was just trying to make sure we all on the same page when it comes to giving medical advice. I think it's great that you had experience somewhat a similar case with Jer; however, first of all, I don't think it's his MTSS, but rather the anterior compartment syndrome. Secondly, when it comes to medial advice, I think it's best and safest to have firmed scientific evidence. But I think it's great that you are helping out though. Keep up the good work!

@AkinOkegbile You said, "and shin splints are definitely a muscular pain nothing to do with the tibia...your tibia hurting is not shin splits." Actually the tibia is 90% of your shin, so it is the shin splints. That is the reason why they changed the name from shin splints to MTSS (medial tibia stress syndrome), which is actually a stress reaction of the medial border of the tibia. What article are you talking about for me to read? That's not an article, is is just a random answer from the internet without any scientific evidence.

comment What can I do to prevent my (outer) shins from tightening while running?
@Jer Have you thought about getting a sports physical therapist looking at your running mechanics and possible shoe wear? I recommend a PT who has lots of experience about treating runners. Also, if not you might want your PT to perform the thorough evaluation to make sure your piriformis and your hamstring muscle on that side are not tight. This is to make sure your nerve and blood supply to the anterior compartment is sufficient. It might be as simple as stretching the correct muscles.

@ Akin Okegbile It's nice of you to help out, but I think you are not reading his description thoroughly. He complains of the anterior lateral border of his shin, not the posterior medial.
