comment Why is “Starting Strength” the most highly regarded workout regime on the Internet?
Coming across this nice answer again, @DMoore stated there's press behind it, but I really have only started to see it myself. In fact, I didn't come across this book until ~8 years after I started lifting, and the first edition came out 2 years after I started. The 3rd edition is now the #1 best seller of Weight Training books on Amazon, so that could be due to the advance of the internet, but back when I bought all those muscle mags they didn't mention starting strength or Rippetoe at all, perhaps because he contradicted everything they're saying?

@LarissaGodzilla I don't have any articles off hand, but typically any exercise involving high repetitions are toning exercises. For that reason, they are generally done with lighter weights, or at least lighter than what you would use for strength or volume training. The term higher reps is kind of relative as well, some people say 15+ while others say 25-30 reps. I'm in the 3x15 camp with ~30 sec rest between sets. I'm sure other techniques work, but this has proved beneficial to me in the past. Best to pose a question on this site for more specifics.

@user7882 haha you are experiencing the Rippetoe Novice Effect, riding a bike made your bench press go up :-) Not quite, but read it anyway, your body likes symmetry too.

@ChristopherBruce not true. I didn't speak on lowering body fat b/c it wasn't part of his question, but lowering body fat is how you see your muscular tone, not how you achieve it. Case in point are skinny people with little to no muscular definition, commonly called skinny fat people although they may not necessarily be one in the same.

comment Glutamine to increase muscle mass through better recovery
I don't workout as much as I used to honestly. I'm getting back into it, but I won't be using the glutamine. BCAAs and Whey will probably be it for supplements for me, but not the glutamine. Most of the supplements on the market now are just wallet drainers to be honest, for the average healthy person.

comment Sample Regimen for losing body fat and retaining lean mass
You make a good point about joint safety, especially when running. Having flat feet (and being previously overweight), I'm all too familiar with joint impact. Running on the treadmill and then taking it to the street was a wake up call for me. Thanks for the reminder, +1. And I definitely know I can't run as far or as fast as I used to, no deception here!

+1 for the 3/3/3, haven't heard of that before. Also, I'm not a Starting Strength fanboy, I'm just a fan of what works amongst all the fluff. That being said, I'll definitely check the Crossfit community out. I've done the boot camp workouts before, not Crossfit but D1, I see you're in MI if you're close you should check them out if you haven't already. Same idea, muscle confusion, cardio and light weight training. Just kind of expensive to keep up a monthly membership. Seems like the type of places where you go to get the ball rolling and then do your own thing.
