Lungs on Fire When Running I have incredibly bad knees, but walk fine. If I run, or even jog, my knees swell up like melons. Cycling is best for bad knees, I have found. I'd also suggest not all overweight people can run, and would caution them to lose weight first, in order not to damage their knees; massive more force goes into the knees when running over walking, so I'd suggest couch to 5k should be preceeded by losing 20kg first... |

How does bicycling compare to other exercises when it comes to fat loss? Sorry, if you use the link above, type in 180 lbs, 10 mph for 60 mins, then 180, 5mph for 120 mins and you actually use more running slower. There are many links, for each one you show, I could show another. I tend to prefer scientific analysis, not web sites, as proof of arguments and all academic studies on the matter have proven running to use the same amount of calories over a certain distance, no matter the pseed you run it at, with obviously nominal variations, due to head wind, gradients, etc (running up hill against the wind will show higher variations than donwhill with tailwinds). |

How does bicycling compare to other exercises when it comes to fat loss? Matthew, I can give you links which show an equal useage of calories for running at different speeds, in fact I have given one to an academic study proving my point. The fact is, thjey are the same, with nominal adjustments for people running whilst flapping their arms in the air. However, on bikes, the faster you go, the more calories are burnt exponentially; I think at 30mph, the difference is 4.2 times the calories used cycling the same distance at 10mph. That is significant. |

How does bicycling compare to other exercises when it comes to fat loss? Obviously, running at 12 mph will incur more forces, natural forces, than walking at 4, but it is nominal, in comparison to the increase with bike speed. Look at this argument from the mind and not from the heart: bikes have 2 wheels in contact with the ground at all times, you are presenting more area, the drag on the derailliers. The differences are nominal in running, but marked in biking |

How does bicycling compare to other exercises when it comes to fat loss? Sorry, but all of the reasearch I have done in the area clearly shows that running and its energy demands ARE linear, whereas cycling and its energy usage isn't. I can provide hundreds of links to counter your link, and I have no doubt you could too, but if you look at this logically, it takes the same amount of energy to carry weight between 2 places, no matter the speed at which it is tranfered, where bike riding differs, is with many more factors coming into play. |
