comment What are good home-exercises for a 7-year-old swimmer to increase stamina, endurance and GPP?
A competitive group for 7 year olds (or 9yo for that matter) should always focus on skills but as they are taught, reinforce them through reasonable distance, repetition, and varying effort to eventually transition each skill to actual racing events, and then go to actual meets periodically to test those skills. If this isn't happening, at risk of there being "too many cooks", perhaps it is worth considering those lessons for some of the training. Tough choice, but you are considering the right things!

It sounds like you are concerned about "junk yardage", and I would be too as a long term concern. I can't count the number of 12&O swimmers I have worked with who were previously injured by pushing it without great style. It would also be a shame to have to choose between lessons and a competitive group, as kids get motivated by being together in a team. [cont]

b) In my opinion both as a parent and USA-S coach, I completely agree with you. I have a growing sample of kids who perform better than most 5 day a week swimmers in my region.

comment Swimming practice for adult beginner
You need a course that will teach you how to be comfortable in the water and balance horizontally well if you want to become a lap-swimmer! Don't worry about buoys yet. They are a crutch if you don't already know something about balance.

The point, however, was not about FQS, but about TI being a useful tool on the path.

Front quadrant swimming as a concept pre-existed TI by quite a bit. It is discussed in Swimming Even Faster and many other publications, and along with modifying the center of buoyancy, is based on a 'long hull' hydrodynamic concept. I didn't see any Olympic marathon or distance swimmers last time around who neglected this concept completely.

I'd say that the skills in Total Immersion is necessary but sometimes not sufficient for meeting speed goals. Balance, rolling, and front quadrant swimming are an essential foundation that optimal propulsion can't decrease the need for.

comment Advantages of using the sidestroke
It is only more efficient when such military considerations as equipment, profile, and visibility are required. Compared to well executed freestyle or backstroke, it will take more energy and time to complete a distance, or it would be used more often in open water competition, where any stroke is legal.

comment Swimming for Fat burn
@TheSurrican, opinions aside, it actually does, and can be scaled to more exercise than almost any other. At one point in my youth I needed 5000+ calories a day to prevent being underweight, all from swimming. In the macro scheme, a calorie burned is a calorie burned.

comment Eating before workout
You absolutely eat before, perhaps during, and after a 120 minute workout, regardless of what kind of workout it is. Eat light, but eat. Prevent cramps and overtraining.
