What can I use to monitor my running workout? It seems the app changed quite a bit since the last time I tried it, guess I should give it another shot :-) |

What should I look for in a running shoe? @AmaDaden, I agree that minimal shoes can help people. But to advice it to everyone without knowing their background is dangerous. Those who promote this idea are often experienced runners, who have a way better running-technique than (overweight) beginners. But I'd love to do a proper study after the effects of minimal shoes! |

What can I use to monitor my running workout? true this works, but it's not 'really' suited when you have to follow a program or have to 'learn' how to run or more importantly when to slow down |

How to calculate Body Fat % Other methods such as BMI are such a rough estimate, that you might as well follow @Sparafusile's advise and look in the mirror |

Is there any benefit of “real” running outdoors vs running on a treadmill in gym? Well the treadmills I have seen have a long wooden plank underneath the belt and the shock absorbers are probably 'simple' springs. They're there so you don't break the thing when running, but surely not meant for softening the landings. But heck, as long as it keeps you running in the Winter, I say go for it, it beats doing nothing! |

Is there any benefit of “real” running outdoors vs running on a treadmill in gym? The impact on the knees and feet isn't any better or even worse on a treadmill. There's nothing soft about the wooden plank you're running on. As for the injuries, one mis step on the treadmill can cause much graver injuries then when falling on the sidewalk or a trail. Besides, the way you work out and your shoes are far more likely to cause injuries than the evenness of the surface. |

What should I look for in a running shoe? However, experienced runners have a lot of experience with different models and brands and also know what other people's experiences were. So based on that they should be able to pick the right one for you. They also don't have any say in what kind of shoes get manufactured, so we're all dependent on the shoe brand to make decent shoes and try to fit you the best ones we have available (this season). |

What should I look for in a running shoe? @ChrisS: I don't have anything bad to say about Runners World, but given they also represent a shoe shop franchise, they won't publish bad things about shoes they're trying to sell. Furthermore, I don't think you'll find any scientists working for them and even scientist don't agree on what shoes really do. There's on research group in Belgium now testing this with robots, which hopefully should answer the question. |
