@Chris There's pretty flimsy evidence of that, and recent results from primate studies show that calorie restriction does not extend lifespan: nytimes.com/2012/08/30/science/…

+1 I think this is a good analysis that proves that all of the weight loss could not be fat. But, it does not work in the other direction; just because you are fasting doesn't mean you will lose your BMR in fat or muscle.

comment Why are compound exercises better than isolation exercises for mass gain?
Who says compound movements are best for mass gains? Bodybuilders certainly isolate muscles and they know how to gain muscle mass better than anyone. It's likely true that deadlift and squat give you a hormonal response that isolation doesn't but it doesn't have to be one or the other.

comment Does daily crossfit excercise and a paleo diet reduce heart disease?
@EhevuTov Robin was making a joke. It's still not on topic. No one knows the answer to your question.

Non fitness relation nutrition questions are off-topic. Also, there have been no long term studies for the paleo diet. Some short term studies show favorable improvements in lipid profiles: yaboga.com/paleo-metabolic.pdf

Oddly, the second paper you cite says people lost weight at a rate of 1869 kcal/lbs, which is just as odd as 10,000/lbs. In any case, the point is that a 3500kcal/lbs calorie deficit is not predictive for weight loss.

I break down some studies and match actual weight loss to calorie restriction here: fitness.stackexchange.com/questions/7354/…

These analytical figures make sense intuitively, and of course it is true that it takes 3500kcal to burn a pound of fat in a bomb calorometer, but in actual people, in studies where people are using a calorie deficit to lose weight, it doesn't add up that way. It seems to take 7500-10,000 calories deficit to lose one pound because the human body is not a closed system bomb calorimeter.

@JohnP Interesting; do you have a source for this?

-1 3500kcal != lbs weight loss. No study supports it.

comment Adding power to my pull-ups?
If you can do 12 strict pullups, you are very likely strong enough for a muscle up. The limiting factor will be technique.
