comment What can a vegetarian eat on a low carb diet?
@MikeS I agree that eating against societal norms is hard. Regarding eating enough, I can tell you from experience that glyco-neogenesis does not work fast enough to keep up with crossfit type workouts and tabata. For many other workouts, it does, but glycogen dependent workouts deplete muscle glycogen faster than it can be replaced by the body, no matter how much you eat, and tabata burpees definitely falls into this category.

@JakeRow123 Tabata burpees + low carb is not a great recipe. Tabata type workouts are very glycogen dependent, which means you will need carbs, or you run the risk of using up all glycogen, which will make you feel bad. Weight training is not so glycogen dependent, so if you go very low carb, you might just do that without the tabata workout.

@MikeS Why can't the ketogenic diet be considered long term?

Focus on fats instead of protien. BTW, this question is off topic. Voting to close.

comment Could a thicker pull-up bar explain my inability to do as many pull-ups?
Are you referring to the diameter of the bar? Also, with your strength gains, have you gained any weight?

comment How many calories should I intake and how much should I “spend” daily?
BTW, I find it somewhat amusing that this answer is probably more in line with current research than any other answer I have seen on this site, and it was provided by an expert, but it quickly received 2 downvotes. All people coming to this site for good information, be warned, this is what you will find.

@sancho Give a -1 to the video on youtube, but this answer doesn't talk about spot reduction at all, so I would disagree with a downvote here if that is the reason.

If these statements have research to go along with them, I would definitely vote this answer up.

I'm not picking on the food diary idea. "Only eat foods with a posted calorie count(like a bag of pretzels or a frozen pizza)". I find this to be bad advice, as it suggests that processed food is the thing you should eat. It is also not true that 3500kcal= 1lbs, as many studies will attest to. It seems to take 7500-10,000 calories deficit to lose one pound because the human body is not a closed system bomb calorimeter.

@JohnP Of course, there is some room for interpretation, but the upshot was that caloric expenditure was pretty static, independent of physical activity. When physical activity increased, resting metabolic rate was lower.

Your first question is a duplicate of this: fitness.stackexchange.com/questions/4111/… I left the second question in tact.

-1 for suggesting that pretzels and frozen pizza is the way to eat. I wish I could give another -1 for saying 3500kcal= 1lbs

comment Diet help for endurance exercise
@Chris Your routine is heavy on eccentric movements, which might be causing your soreness. You might try, for example, ring rows instead of negative pull-ups, and see if that helps. And situps on the ground instead of hanging.

@user3495 The approach your doctor took seems more promising than most, though. I wonder if he has published any of the results, or if he is basing the method off of some other study? I'd love to read more about it.

@user3495 Congratulations on your weight loss. Someone who is 5'10" and weighs 250 lbs has a bmi of 35 (low end of obese II). A sedentary male of this size requires over 3500/day to maintain their weight. If you consumed 1000kcal/day for 5 months, you would have a calorie deficit of 375000 = 107 lbs. Since you also increased your exercise, your deficit was greater than that. Therefore, you lost less weight than would have been predicted if 3500 kcal = 1lbs.

@JohnP Really? We have to go through this again? Just because you say there are studies that correlate closely to it doesn't make it true, as I showed in all of the studies you have listed before.

Recent research shows that you can not really increase your calorie expenditure because your metabolism will slow down or speed to keep it the same: plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0040503 and researchgate.net/publication/… .
