This in conjunction with Sports, Exercise, and the Common Cold, listed below, hits the spot.

Your quote from the article doesn't accurately summarize the article's findings. In fact, they state the opposite. From the bottom of the fourth page of the article: "If the athlete has symptoms of a common cold with no constitutional upset, Roberts [51] recommended safely resuming training a few days after the resolution of symptoms." Your quote is relevant to "very competitive athletes who cannot afford to miss any training days, even when ill".

comment Why are push-ups and sit-ups so common?
shrug I've seen people do both on the main stack overflow site. I can do that from now on if that's how we roll here.

I'm just gonna mention that I think this is the sort of thing which would probably be best asked to a medical professional, or at least a registered dietician, rather than on an online forum.

comment Optimal method to vary muscle group recruitment?
Thanks for the detailed writeup. Regarding the 3-day split, I'm still worried that doing biceps (for example) only once a week is too infrequent to build mass. I know lots of people do this, I'm just thinking about this chart and wondering whether its too infrequent.

Thanks, that's a good answer. I guess my real question is the one you brought up, which one will make me a better trainer? Is there any real benefit between the different programs?

comment Is it healthy to exercise a muscle when it's still sore?
@samuelandrew This isn't the sort of thing you'll be able to "feel", this is about the underlying physiology. The general rule is 2-3 days for most muscles.
