comment Health benefits of numerous mini-exercise sessions per day
@Kate Two thoughts behind that: (1) do something that won't cause me to max out each set, and (2) do something that won't put me too out of breath, as I am supposed to be able to talk on the phone if necessary, and it would just be weird if it sounded like I was running. The exact number isn't as important; I'm more curious about the benefit of mini-exercises.

@DaveLiepmann - I see that this is too broad. I'll rephrase the question to try to restrict the target audience.

comment Any authoritative references for strength training nutrition requirements?
@jp2code - I'm not looking for a flowchart at all; in fact, re-reading my post, I'm not even sure what part of my question made you think I was. I'm looking for information on nutrition as it applies to bodybuilders. I listed "dietary recommendations" as a single bullet point, which could be something as simple as "have this much protein, this many total calories, and this many carbs", not "please take all information on a nutritionist would need to do their job and stick it in a book".

comment Workout routine for 5 days a week
From their about us page: "CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide." So yeah, I'd definitely classify them as a strength/endurance program. I don't do it myself, but hearing your situation, definitely check it out.

Based on your time availability, you may want to check out CrossFit... it's based on a daily, varying 20-minute exercise routine.

comment Difficulty breathing in push-up position
I doubt this type of question will receive a satisfactory answer, as you haven't--and really can't in a forum setting--provided enough information to diagnose the problem. Keep at it, and if it doesn't get easier after a consecutive month, see a doctor. If it really worries you, see a doctor sooner.

comment Why does my neck feel strained when doing push-ups?
This is good advice for any exercise; form should almost always take precedence over quantity.

Thanks, I didn't notice. That looks promising.

comment Are there any dumbbell exercises equivalent to the basic squat?
Thanks. I'm thinking that if I want to do a proper squat I'm just gonna have to get the barbell... this doesn't engage the back and core the same way as a standard squat.

Can you provide a link to a video or description of technique?

comment Why did my legs give way?
I would suggest seeing a doctor about this, as it's a possibly serious enough problem that a forum answer should not be the definitive solution.

As a follow-up to this... for about two weeks I began each routine with shoulder dislocations, and I've been working on my form. The problems are now completely gone.

@ivo - added a bunch. Lots of this info came from exrx.net , which I find to be a pretty good, thorough resource.
