Feb 14, 2018 at 17:37 comment added JohnP It's really hard to say without being there and seeing the fall. Yes, maybe? And putting your hands in pushup position is almost guaranteed to eventually give you a wrist fracture, unfortunately. It's the most instinctive way to fall, but it's also the most risky. (The body instinctively protects the head/torso at the expense of the limbs). It's also exacerbated because skis get in the way huge, and motion is limited by boots/bindings unless you get snapped out of them.
Feb 14, 2018 at 17:20 comment added Andy @JohnP: Yes i know I should not have fighted the angular momentum throwing me forward. Instead I should have leaped forward into a rolling ball ? I think it takes a lot of practice to turn this into an instinct though. My instinct so far has alway beeen to arch my back backwards, put my hands in front of myself in push up position and take the hit on the chest slowing the movement down with a push up movement. Often my face get hit too but this has worked fine with snow before.
Feb 14, 2018 at 16:57 comment added JohnP @Andy - Quite possible, but I teach martial arts in various capacities, and most fall injuries are because of improper technique. :)
Feb 14, 2018 at 16:54 comment added Andy @JohnP: I might be wrong but I think the result would have been different had I falled this way 20 years ago. But you may be on to something important. My mind is not clear so close to the accident so my judgement about the accident may be clouded. I am also surprised that I did not react fast enough to throw out my arms in front of me which I usually do. Can my reaction time has deterioated that much?

Feb 14, 2018 at 14:18 comment added JohnP Hurting yourself falling is generally neither a function of age or weight until you get into your 60+ or have a condition. All it means is that you didn't fall correctly. :)
Feb 14, 2018 at 11:58 comment added Raditz_35 As a 44 year old it will take years of hard work and top nutrition to get anywhere near bulky naturally. You will not get magically heavier either without a caloric surplus, maybe a kg of waterweight max. Don't worry about it. Do what gives you the best results.
