From the quoted portion of the study's abstract, I conclude that the free weight squat activates muscles at least as much as -- and, on average, more than -- the Smith machine squat; thus, one's (limited) time in the gym is better-spent with barbell squats. Tangentially: "switching things up" can indeed keep workouts fresh, but irregular or one-off exercises do not aid long-term strength training. | |
